ENVIRONMENT AND LAND ODANAK
Description and Mission
The Odanak Environment and Land Office (BETO; Mziaow8gan ta Aki) began operations in 2007 and has since worked on numerous projects related to the environment and land management. Over the years, we have developed diverse expertise that allows us to better respond to the needs and interests of the community.
BETO’s main mandate is to provide quality services to the members of Odanak. Our team includes people who can answer your questions and address your needs regarding land management in the territory. We also work in partnership with the Grand Council of the Waban Aki Nation to promote the interests of the Abenaki Nation with numerous organizations (Priority Intervention Zone Committees, Regional Wildlife Tables, other Indigenous communities, governments, industries, etc.). We also frequently participate in or organize various outreach and discovery activities within the community in the field of the environment (community fishing, scientific activities, community events, etc.). Finally, a key element of BETO is to improve knowledge and management of our Mother Earth (wildlife, flora, water, land, etc.).
Since its creation, the BETO has sought to align its mandates with well-defined projects. Among other things, we have developed several initiatives related to species at risk present in the territory (gathering knowledge on yellow sturgeon, creating habitat for perch, improving hare habitat — see other sections of this site). Waste management, numerous community activities, and personalised services are also good examples of the tasks we regularly carry out at BETO.
Needless to say, carrying out these activities requires the contribution of a multidisciplinary team. This is why BETO hires a land manager, biologists, technicians, field assistants, and students. Whenever possible, we prioritise hiring and training personnel from the Odanak community. These job opportunities in the environmental field help train competent and passionate workers!
BETO is a department of the Odanak Abenaki Council (CAO) that operates mainly through external funding. The projects we lead — with the unwavering support of the CAO — allow us to fulfil our mandate year-round. Among our most significant funding programs are the Aboriginal Fund for Species at Risk, the Fondation de la Faune du Québec, the Community Interaction Program, and the Waste Management Initiative. Of course, many other organisations also contribute, directly or indirectly, to the smooth running of our organisation.
